Introductions & Overview

Hey everybody,

I'm Rob, and I'm organising the Summer of Code programme for Dojo in 2008. We want this year's summer of code to be bigger and better than in '07.

Before SoC starts, this forum is a place for discussing your ideas. Don't bother trying to keep stuff secret from other students - there are plenty of projects and work to go around. You'll be able to improve your proposal a lot better if you get as much feedback as possible before it gets submitted.

Feel free to ask questions about the SoC programme here as well.

SoC Intro: Drag & Drop Form Editor

Hello Planet Dojo! I'm Jeff Balogh, and I'm doing doing a Google Summer of Code
project for Dojo this summer. I'm an undergrad at the University of Central
Florida, with one more semester to go. I'm living in Toronto this summer and
working with the DrProject folks, so drop me a line if you're in the area. :)

Making Dojo choice of Portals & MeshUps

Hi
I think it will be great to have the following:
1. Enable Desktop like Portlets which can be moved/minimzed/hidden etc. as iGoogle/My Yahoo etc. has.
Ext-Js has very nice example check: http://extjs.com/deploy/dev/examples/portal/portal.html
2. Enable Content Pane accept href from External Servers
(Can utilize XHR and other stuff from: http://www.psychdesktop.net/ )

Summer of Code - one more week for applications

Applications, ideas, and questions about Summer of Code have been coming thick and fast into Dojo over the past couple of weeks. We've got some very promising and well thought-out proposals from smart students, but we want more!

Google has just announced that the deadline for applications has been extended until April 7. So if you've been thinking about SoC but been too busy for whatever reason, now's your chance...

One more week for applications!

As discussed in the Google blog, Summer of Code applications have been extended for another week (until 7 April).

So, if you've submitted an application see how you can improve it, and if you haven't you have a bit more time to get organised.

The Markup Previews project idea

Hello,

I'm interested in "Markup Previews" from the ideas list.

Some time ago I used Markdown in one of my projects and thought that it would be great to be able to see how it looks like in real-time while the text is being edited without sending a request to server.

So I'll be glad to create a markup language parser and integrate it with dojo as a GSoC project.
The development will include:

  • architecture design (from what it will consist off and how it will be integrated with other dojo stuff)

What should be in a proposal?

A post from David Anderson to the GSoC-discuss list sums it up pretty well:

Speaking as a mentor, I'd at least like to see in a proposal some
understanding of the challenges and steps involved in accomplishing
your task. I want to be sure that you understand what it is you're
signing up for, in terms of work. Saying that you're confident you can
accomplish the task means nothing if you haven't understood what the

Drag & Drop Form Editor

Hello,

I'm Jeff Balogh, and I'd like to get an SoC spot with Dojo this summer. I think
it would be fun to build a drag & drop form editor for Dojo/Dijit. I'm
interested in doing this because the the other project I work on, DrProject is trying to move to
user-configurable dynamic forms, and a form editor would help us out a lot. I
think other people could benefit from this as a part of Dijit, and I could
benefit from a Dojo mentor.

I've been doing open source since SoC 2007, when I started work on DrProject (a
